USUA Club 1 Ultralight Airport Directory

One very essential part of a flight plan is information about the airfield(s) at which you plan to land during your flight. There are several sources for such information. Sectional and Terminal Area charts give the very basic information you need. You can get more information from such handbooks as AOPA's Airport Directory. Many states publish similar handbooks for the airports in their areas. Federally published are the U.S. Terminal Procedures Publication (TPP) books. These are available in loose leaf binders and are updated periodically. Versions of these are also available from several commercial sources. One very important source of information about many airports are the Notices to Airmen (NOTAMS) available to all of us both at or through our local airports and by telephone. Certainly, NOTAMS should be checked before a cross-country flight to determine if there is any recent information about facilities enroute as well as at your destination.

About now, someone is thinking "But I land at ultralight fields, not GA airports, and there is no information on them." Yes, and no. There will be no NOTAMS on the field but do you listen to AWOS or ASOS facilities enroute to check weather and winds? That's always a good idea.

We in Flying Club 1 have our own source of information about ultralight fields, at least, most of those that we are likely to visit. Dave Riedel has collected and prepared in a standard format that fit into loose leaf binders (approx. 10 by 6 inches) diagrams and information about ultralight fields in our neck of the woods. The binders, by the way, are available through Sporty's catalog.

How do you get this information? Dave is working with our Web Master, Greg Palmer, to have them available for you to download from the Club web site. A notice will be published as soon as these pages are ready for you to download. I strongly urge each pilot who plans to fly out of our local area to build his own airport directory.

Planning to fly down to Holly Springs later this year to a Club 250 fly-in? The information about the Holly Springs airport is there - airfield diagram and information about it. Even the geographic coordinates for your GPS unit are included.

Looking down our list of planned events for 2005, I see, in September, a fly-out to Luray. Luray is a GA airport and is not in our Club directory. But, information about it is in all of the other sources I mentioned at the beginning of this article.
