Training

The USUA Club 1 PPG group does not offer a training program. We are a group of pilots with a wide variety of flying experience, but do not have any instructors. However, if you are interested in becoming a powered paraglider pilot, there are two ways to go about it. You can take a one or two week vacation and learn at a full-time school, or learn part-time at a local school. There are no full-time schools in the area that we know of. The advantage of a full-time school is the speed at which you will learn. Most schools will have you do your first solo within a few days and most likely have you flying on your own in less than two weeks. The disadvantages are cost (the training typically costs about the same, but the trip to the school will add a great deal of residual costs such as hotel and flights) and the need to use up vacation time. A local school can teach you part-time on the weekends (and possibly some evenings). The advantages are lower cost and being able to learn in your spare time. The disadvantage is the amount of time it may take to become a self-sufficient pilot. This could take more than 2 months, and we have even seen where it has taken the entire season for the student to become a self-sufficient pilot.

If you are having trouble deciding which training path to choose (full-time or part-time), email one of the group members. Any one of us will be happy to answer any other questions or discuss our training experiences with you. Whatever you decide to do, below are schools we recommend based on the personal experiences of our group members.

(If you do attend one of these schools based on our recommendations, do us a favor and let them know. We don’t make a commission or anything like that, but it would be nice for us to get credit for the referral!)

For a full-time school, we recommend Para-Motor City in Albuquerque, NM. This school is run by Eric Dufour and Michelle Daniele. Eric Dufour is probably the most accomplished instructor and pilot in this country. Michelle Daniele is also an excellent instructor and pilot, and probably the sweetest PPG instructor we’ve ever met! Club member Len Alt trained with Eric Dufour in 2004 when Eric was in Florida. Club member Paresh Karandikar trained with both Eric and Michelle at Para-Motor City in June 2006. Check ‘em out! You won’t be disappointed.

For a local part-time school, we recommend The Dukes of Windsoar. They are based in Libertytown, MD and run by pilot Dan Kriseler, who is a great guy and an excellent pilot. Dan and his group have helped Blue Ridge Paragliding students a great deal during the 2005 and 2006 training seasons. (Refer to the USUA Club 1 - PPG homepage for information on Blue Ridge Paragliding).
